Comparing RCA's & XLR's on Klimax Twin

I'm running, among other things, a Klimax Twin and Klimax Kontrol.
I want to compare a pair of XLR interconnect cables against a pair of RCA's, both of which are from the same manufacturer but at different levels in the food chain. Due to the installation it is taking too long to swop them over so it's rather difficult to make any decision.
This isn't a comparison of RCA v XLR it just happens that I have one of each.
The Twin has a switch on the rear to select XLR or RCA so my question is: Can I connect both pairs of cables at the same time and use the switch to select one or the other or are there any technical reasons why I shouldn't do this?

Some advice for an older Linn fan

Hi there. I have had my lp 12 for 30 years and had loads of upgrades over the time. But I'm getting to the stage I'm going to buy a new one. I will probably get the top spec one.
When I popped over to my nearest Linn dealer the guy was very helpful and was giving me some advice on the options. He was saying that getting the top spec lp12 might not be the best way to spend the cash as some of the older parts of my system will hold it back a bit.
I currently have LP12 with Akito arm, Ikemi, lingo,Kairn, 2x lk140 and ninka speakers.

He was telling me a bit about the new DSm stuff and he mentioned that if I'm really into vinyl then maybe buying one of the last accurate control pre amps would be a good idea. He said that the new pre amp designed more with DSM in mind isn't quite so good with the lp12.

I'm not a very technical person, but could some of you guys in the know give me some opinions on this issue. I can see myself building my system up again over the next few years and I love music. Am I making a mistake sticking mainly to vinyl now?

Akudorik positioning

I notice on the back of the Akudorik speaker there is a porthole. In order to improve the bass performance should the speaker be placed nearer to the front wall or further away...

Space Optimisation does not save

I am using Majik DSM with Davaar 32 and latest Konfig software. Windows 7 64 bit.

I enter all data about room and speaker, but when I click on "save" all data is emptyied from the screen and when I load the saved file there is no data available as well. I retried it with "save as" but result is the same.

Is there a bugfix necessary or how can I use Space Optimisation and SAVE the information entered?

QNAP Fanless NAS

Been using my Windows desktop PC for awhile now as a media server, running Kazoo (for music) and Plex (for video).

Thinking of finally getting a NAS.
2TB will be more than enough (I use less than 1TB at the moment)
Looking at some 2-bay QNAP models, such as the TS-251 and HS-251.
The HS looks desirable due to being fanless.

Any thoughts?

What is maximum volume for Majik DSM?

I hope you understand this question, but referring to amplifiers where you have a volume control (knob), it's said that you never should go beyond "12 o-clock", because the music volume will not get much louder than this and you will only end up ruining your speakers.

But - is it the same principal on the digital Volume control on the Majic DSM, where you only have "+" and "-" going from "0" to "100"? Or is 12 o-clock = "100" in amplifier volume? Where is the "max volume", if you understand what I'm trying to say...?

As Vinny Jones would say. After being a Linn owner for over 25 years I have admitted defeat in my quest to achieve the sound I'm looking for and am going.......yes....to the dark side and joining the Naim owner community.

Seriously, I've just fallen out of love with Linn as I know it. I 'think' the issue lies with the speakers as I just find the Majik 140's, frankly, horrible. I've bought upgraded bases, changed cables, changed position and mucked about with Star Wars Optimisation (hmm....) but to no avail - they still sound as sterile as a surgical wipe.

So....yesterday. Ashamedly I trotted in to a Naim dealer thinking 'there's no chance - I just need to rule it out'. 3 hours later I was in love with the Superuniti AND the NDX/Supernait 2 combo. I found the speaker matching easy and, voila, add in PMC Twenty 23's and I've found what I'm looking for.

So, thanks for all the advice and help you lot have given over the years; notably when I said goodbye Classik and hello Majik DSM 3 years ago. That whole NAS setup was something I couldn't have done without the help, and infinite patience, of some on here.

I'll lurk from time to time and am curious to see how the Exakt thing takes off...I 'may' be back!

Noise when phono input selected

Hi,

I have just had a few upgrades made to my LP12, a new Goldring 2500 MM cartridge, Trampolin and Hercules power supply. Unfortunately when selecting the Phono input on my amp there is a very noticeable buzz in the right speaker, almost like a guitar amp hum. It is mostly apparent when there are quiet segments in the music, fade outs and in-between tracks. The noise is there even when the deck is turned off. The grounding cable is connected to the back of the amp, a Marantz AV7702 which has a built in Phono stage.

Could it be that I need to get an external Phono preamp to rectify the problem? Would getting a preamp be a worthwhile upgrade to the one built into the amp such as the Rega Fono MM MK2?

Any assistance would be appreciated as it is really starting to spoil the enjoyment of listening to records.

downloading to NAS

Hi,

I'd be grateful for some more advice on using my NAS/DS system.

I'm ripping my cd's using dbPoweramp then using mp3tag to tidy up. At the moment I'm having to use my laptop for this as well as also using it to run the system via Kazoo. I'm stuck with this until I get some more funds. I'm managing to get music playing and it sounds fantastic. I do have a couple of questions though.

Firstly, I'm accessing my QNAP(also via the laptop) and have set up the following directories for my music - Qmultimedia/audio/Music/ - I then create a new directory(or is it file) with the artist name. I'm then adding the music via the QNAP admin page but am having to do this track by track - is this the most effective way to transfer my music.

Secondly when I rip the music via dbPoweramp I have it set up to lossless level 8 - is this ok?

Isobarik B139 help please

My cat has scratched one of my Isobariks' B139s, so that there are effectively little cuts in the edge of the flat oval-shaped part. It still sounds fine, thankfully, but I'm worried it's been weakened and might fail. I'm thinking of putting a little glue in the damage to seal up the cuts. Any thoughts on whether that's a good idea? What sort of glue? I don't want to damage the material, which looks like polystyrene. Thanks v much for any thoughts.

LP12 - Service and Upgrade Recommendations

Appreciate any advice on getting the unit serviced and also the best upgrade path to pursue

I've tried my local supplier in Dorset (listed on the Linn website) but they do not carry out service work.

Linn Kiko Setup issues

I've been following the setup wizard for Linn Kiko, however I still face the following problem(s):

1) Where do I see which is the left and which is the right speaker - couldnt find it.
2) When I'm supposed to hold the # key, I don't hear any confirmation sound as described in the wizard.
3) What is the simplest way to play music on Linn Kiko without having access to internet?

ADSM HDMI no Sound

Hi there,

being a new ADSM owner for some weeks, I have some trouble with HDMI I can´t find a solution for.

Firstly, I´m not interested in the DS-part of the DSM for now, I just use it as a preamp and for the DAC.
And that´s exactly where my problem lies:

my computer - which is also my TV via tuner card - is connected to the DSM through HDMI (just for sound, not for picture).
After coming back from holiday and doing the regular Microsoft updates, there´s no sound from the ´computer´-source anymore.

To get things a bit more complicated:
from the first day I had the DSM, the sound from the computer got lost as soon as I changed to another source and back.
After switching the device off and on again (not just sleep mode), it worked until I changed the input again.
To see, if this was probably just an HDMI1 issue, I set visible = yes to HDMI2, which bettered things in that way, that changing source from HDMI2 to HDMI1 brought the sound back, whilst changing from LP12 to HDMI1 leaded to silence Sad

As said above, after having the latest Microsoft updates installed, there´s absolutely no way to get back any signal via HDMI.
Finally, today, I went back to analogue through RCA, but that´s not what it was intended, as I think.

Any thoughts, ideas, advice is highly appreciated, as my idea was to use the DSM-DAC instead of the one built in the computer - and therefore I´d like to keep it connected via HDMI.

Koetsu Cartridges

Hi all,

Just wondering what the opinion is on Koetsu Cartridges as there doesn't seem to be much talk at all about them here.

I have an Ittok LV3 Mk II which I'm contemplating putting a Rosewood Signature on it which I picked up from a reliably known previous owner who's clocked up around 150 hours on it.

What's the view out there on the Koetsu's.

Small Speaker Suggestions for Second Klimax System

Just bought a second home in London, and will be spending various periods of time there when not in Abu Dhabi. Am looking into a second Klimax system, simple set-up, based on KDS (or KDSM), Solos and small speakers. The modest sized living room in the London apartment tends to dictate that the speakers will in all likelihood have to sit on top of a pair of low, fitted cabinets (or be wall mounted, which would be a last resort). Not stand mounted unfortunately. I'm therefore looking for some inspiration. Will see if I can check out a pair of Vivid V1s (always had a soft spot for Vivid), but curious to know of other experiences with small speakers in a Klimax system in this kind of setting.

Left or right channels?

Hi guys,

this should be a simple one, just setting up my system after a recent house move, connecting the speaker terminals to find they are marked channel 1 and 2 and not left or right. Which goes where? I am guessing left = 1 and right = 2. I think I got it the wrong way round just now and was convinced it sounded better that way! maybe my hearing is back to front or my right ear works better than my left!!
Would be great to know which way round so I haven't got to drag it all out and change it again....
