I just want to give a post of thanks to Phil and the team for wonderfully entertaining evening at the factory last night.

Great music, good company and, above all, a fantastic insight into the Exakt technology and a very conclusive demonstration of it.

Promoting Studiomaster/High Res Downloads

<RANT!!> Most on this forum are into studiomaster/high resolution 24bit recordings.
SO why do artists themselfs not promote there availability?

Take for example Agnes Obel 'Aventine' (highly recommended by the way). On her website she promotes its availability on Vinyl, CD and Digital from iTunes (spit) but does not mention that it is available in 24bit high-res digital download from Linn. Why?
It is surely in her interest to promote all format options.

The sad thing is that this seams to be the norm for most artist that have a 24bit dowload option available. WHY are they not promoting the 24bit availability?

DS Not responding every few weeks

Every few weeks or so, my Majik DS does not appear to a controller, trying both Kinsky on my mac and using an ipad and phone.

The DS responds via the IP over HTTP so can confirm it is still functioning network wise and hitting play on the remote control i.e. infrared so can also confirm all is ok network wise.

the only solution I have found to fix this is to reboot the DS via the power switch at the back.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I can also confirm I have no network problems as I have a few computers which always stay connected and I have monitoring in place to tell me if anything drops offline.

Not sure what I can try, I am running the Davaar 15, also tried 16 but does the same.

Now, I can confirm it is not the network or my DS specifically as my fathers also does the same thing and he has the exact same casing/model.

Is there an easy way to...

rip blu-ray audio?

With all the nice music that is available on the pure audio blu-ray format, which isn't yet available to download (at least, that i can find) i thought it might be worthwhile buying the PABR and ripping it myself, however i understand that it's not so straight forward.

There's some good stuff on PABR; layla, night at the opera, selling england by the pound, breakfast in america, songs in the key of life and a couple of others. Now these may eventually become available to download as 24 bit and maybe HD Tracks UK will have some or all (when it eventually opens), but the PABR's are actually quite keenly priced, some considerably cheaper then the standard Linn download prices.

So, any help appreciated. Obviously need a Blu-Ray drive on laptop - got that but what about fancy ripping software?

Thanks in advance for the advice

LINN LK1, good enough for digital?

Some months ago, I asked in this forum if someone had one LK1 for sale, and I was told I could not ask that, so I looked else. I found a shop near Boston MA selling one old and very used LK1, they told me phono inputs were noisy. I got it for 200 dlrs, they ship to Boston and my son doing an MBA there, brought it to me few weeks ago. It was as I was told, it is one of the firsts LK1, with a not so nice front face, and the audio board looks very dark, very very used. But what I was looking for was the control board, because the one on mine was damaged because of the backup battery leak. This was ok, I checked the battery, it was leaking! But just starting and the board was Ok, so I take out the battery, install a new one and replace it in my Lk1, used the magic silicon liquid and it now looks just as new, and the most important, it sounds just like new. By the way, the repair parts LK1 came with one Dirak! So now I have spare parts. I connected it to a four AV51 amps with crossover cards to my Keltiks and started to try them with HD 24/192 and 24/96 music, from my Macbook Pro and a 24/192 Cambridge Dacmagic 100 DAC. So, yes, this is a great preamp (the last runs of this preamp) and yes it sound just magnificent. Some reasons: this was the first Linn remote controlled preamp from the time Linn was looking to demonstrate they were better than NAIM after Linn started doing electronics and stop recommending use NAIM with Linn, and they did very good, after all this years it still sounds great. Now even my LK1 remote works after repair the battery space that was also damaged because of battery leaks. No doubt, Linn is a great audio system and quality is first class!!

I have just applied for a job at work around 10 minutes from Leicester which would involve relocating...

Need I say anymore how dangerous this could be?

Just bought myself what I think is a real bargain. Exotik pre-amp (non Dynamik and non-DA). Boy has it made a difference. Replaced an old Musical Fidelity pre-amp 3A.

In completely mint condition (somewhat undersold here by the vendor) not a single mark on it anywhere.

I'm not very good at explaining the differences in sound, except to say they are huge. Good ol' Kabers, singing way better than before. When do they run out of talent?

Has anyone out there created a dedicated mains supply? We are rewiring the house and I have permission to give the hi-fi its own supply.

What are people's thoughts and recommendations?

Many thanks as ever.

Some of you may know this is shortly to be released on Blu-ray Audio with extensive additional 12" remix material. Cool

But for download fans HighResAudio are now listing it in their preview panel for release on 28/4/2014. Not too sure it will contain all the extra material but I assume it will as they have it listed as the same Deluxe Edition. Cool

Calling AK/0 Owners

I was talking to a dealer the other and mentioned that I'm after a new plastic fascia for my Akurate Kontrol 0 as the current one is scratched. It turns out that Linn may have a slight delay in shipping one after an order is placed as the are made on request. And this got me thinking...

My MDS is all nice a uniformly black; black metal and black plastic display. The AK/0 is black metal, but a OCD-jarring silver/grey plastic bit.

I'm sure that Linn, if they thought there would be enough interest would at least consider a limited run of black plastic bits - if it were commercially worthwhile. So I thought I would have a poll for the AK/0 owners.

If Linn were to offer a replacement plastic display for the AK/0 which of the following would suit your reaction best?

Kazoo Beta

One day you could wake up and Kazoo is released.

We are pleased to announce that Kazoo, our new user interface and server combination, is now available as a beta.

Kazoo has four headline features, (some of these feature will only be available when using Kazoo with Kazoo server).

Fast and easy music browsing

Kazoo provides quick access to albums, artists and genres. Each category presented in the best way to provide fast and easy browsing.

Search

Kazoo provides support for searching track information. The results are categorised by albums, artists, and tracks.

Kazoo's search additionally provides support for classical music by adding a Classical category to the search results. The Classical category contains only classical tracks, which are grouped by composer.

Multi-room

Kazoo makes multi-room management and control easy.

Kazoo allows rooms to be grouped together and then provides a master volume control for the group, as well as individual volume control for the rooms that make up the group.

Multi-room volume control

Kazoo has been designed to support the features we have now but also to be easily extended for features we want in the future (and rapid iterations to these features).

At this point we are interested in beta testers with the following set-ups:
A Linn DS system controlled by on or more of,
  • a MacBook, Mac Mini or iMac
  • a laptop or desktop running Windows
  • an iPad

We are particularly keen on feedback from users with a music server running on,
  • a MacBook, Mac Mini or iMac
  • a laptop, desktop or NAS running Windows

FAQ

Q1: I would love to try Kazoo and provide feedback; how do I do that?
A1: Great! We are really keen to get your feedback.
You will need to download two pieces of software to start using Kazoo, Kazoo (the control application) and Kazoo Server (the server application).
You can download Kazoo from,

http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/DownloadKazoo

You can download Kazoo Server from,

http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/DownloadKazooServer

Q2: I would love to try Kazoo for iPad; how do I do that?
A2: In order to install Kazoo on an iPad the iPad needs to be part of our beta program. To be considered for the program you should PM davidd with your iPad's UDID, iPad model and what DSs you have in your setup.

UDIDs will be added to the beta program in stages and the added UDIDs will be posted back in the Kazoo beta thread.

You can find more information about obtaining your iPad's UDID at http://www.wikihow.com/Obtain-the-Identi...od-or-iPad

Note due to limited space only 1 iPad will be able to be considered per applicant.

Q3: I have been using Kazoo for a while and I would like to provide you with some feedback. How do I do that?
A3: Great, we are really keen to get your feedback. You can provide us with feedback using the “Report to Linn” button (found in Settings) or, if you prefer, you can leave a post in the developer forum.

If you are leaving a thread please format your post in the following way:

Q4: Now that Kazoo has been released will Kinsky disappear?
A4: No. Kinsky will remain available. If this changes we will let you know.

Q5: What is Kazoo Server?
A5: Kazoo server is a media server that implements the standard UPnP/AV media server specification and the OpenHome Media (ohMedia) Server specification. The ohMedia server specification is analogous to the ohMedia renderer specification that the Linn DS implements. The ohMedia server specification is what has made Kazoo's browsing and searching experience possible and it will allow further improvements in the future.

Q6: Can I use both Kinsky and Kazoo to control my Linn system?
A6: Yes. Kinsky and Kazoo will operate correctly when used together in a Linn system, both when run on different devices and when run on the same device.

Q7: I have an Android tablet; can I try out Kazoo?
A7: Not yet. We are currently seeking feedback for the set-ups outlined above. However, Android is high on our list of features to add to Kazoo.

Q8: I have an iPhone/iPod/Android phone; can I try Kazoo?
A8: Not yet. We are currently seeking feedback for the set-ups outlined above. However, phone support is on our list of features to add to Kazoo.

Q9: I currently run a media server on a linux-based NAS; can I try Kazoo?
A9: Absolutely. Kazoo works with both the ohMedia server specification and the UPnP/AV media server specification. However, the new browse and search features will only be available if you use Kazoo Server.

Q10: I currently run a linux-based media server on a NAS; can I try Kazoo Server?
A10: Not yet. However, support for QNAP is high on our list of features to add to Kazoo Server.

Q11: I have playlists that I created using Kinsky; will they still work?
A11: Not yet. Kazoo has no support for saved playlists. However, playlists are on our list of features to add to Kazoo. If playlist support is an important feature for you please continue to use Kinsky.

Q12: I use the Kinsky iTunes plugin/Songbox iTunes plugin with Kinsky; can I still do this with Kazoo?
A12: Not yet. Kazoo has no support for iTunes. However, iTunes support is on our list of features to add to Kazoo. If iTunes support is an important feature for you please continue to use Kinsky.

Q13: I use the Kinsky BBC plugin/Songbox BBC plugin with Kinsky; can I still do this with Kazoo?
A13: Not yet. Kazoo has no support for media apps. However, media apps support is on our list of features to add to Kazoo. If media apps support is an important feature for you please continue to use Kinsky.

Q14: I use a 3rd party UPnP/AV media server and it supports search; will I be able to search with Kazoo?
A14: Not yet. Kazoo only supports search using the ohMedia server specification. However, support for search on UPnP/AV media servers is on our list of features to add to Kazoo.

Q15: How do I get my classical music to appear under the classical tab?
A15: You need have tagged your classical tracks with the composer tag and have “Classical” in a genre tag. Note that “Classical” needs to start with a capital C! You can tag your tracks using your favourite tag editor.

[Kazoo Beta Bug] - Windows oddities

So I was playing around with this - all rather good and works very well.

However - number of small issues with the Windows interface I could spot (and one of them is doing my head in!):

.jpg  Kazoo capture.JPG (Size: 341.92 KB / Downloads: 31)

On this screen shot, we've got several things going on - some server, some GUI. Some are observations/questions - one in particular is a real pain!
  • The ordering of albums is a little odd compared to other servers - to me, when I am browsing by album, I am interested in seeing the album beginning with the letter A first (or actually number 0), not the artist beginning with (in this case) 8. Even then, the albums are not in alphabetical order!
  • Grouping of double CDs - please! Minim handles it really well.
  • Pressing letter (let's say) G on my keyboard does things in Kinsky (makes it jump to G) - doesn't here.
  • The really annoying one - the scroll bar on the right is REALLY narrow and doesn't appear to be able to be clicked on to jump. I can pick it up and drag it down, but if I try and click somewhere way down the page, I end up clicking on an album.

Just minor things I noticed in the first few minutes of using it - it's all a great step forwards though. The multi-room is FANTASTIC!

[Kazoo Beta Feature] - artist sort?

$

Hi - I know it's early days yet and this is only a minor thing but would it be possible at some point to enable sorting of artists using the ARTIST SORT tag?
I use this with Asset and it works well. With the Kazoo beta I get, say, Neil Innes and Nancy Sinatra both listed under 'N', whereas I'd like them to appear under 'I' and 'S' respectively, as they do in Asset.

Many thanks (and keep up the good work!)

Downloaded Kazoo server and CP for Mac (10.9.2) .

All I get is a message that I should download Konfig to configure the server. Well, Konfig is installed but it does not seem to find the Kazoo server. All I get in the selection menu is my DS's and Minimserver.

Any ideas?

using silver balanced as unbalanced

$

A friend of mine asks me to solder neutrik plugs on some silver cable he bought off a well known auction site.
He is using a linn akurate cd player into kairn/klout. In addition there is a pair of black interconnects.

I suppose the superior silvers should be used between source an pre.

The only problem is, that it is actually the balanced version of the silver cable (by accident). The cd player has a balanced output, but I guess balanced would only make sense if the kairn had a balanced input.

If I am not wrong I can simply connect one of the inner strands to the shielding and both to ground and use it as a unbalanced interconnect.

Is there any mistake? I would be grateful for advice.

Hi all

I am having an issue with my Macbook pro, Kinsky and my Zoneripper NAS
I am using a majik DS
The problem is, I can play single songs but not a full album, unless I drag all songs into a playlist
I don't have any issues with iTunes, all works fine?

Konfig saying everything is fine

I have recently moved to using my mac and had no issues before with my old windows based laptop or my iPad

Anyone ever had this problem or got any advice?

Any info would be greatly appreciated

To vinyl or not to vinyl - question

At the same time as I'm contemplating entering the world of DS I'm also wondering if my interest in vinyl can be revived.

As a taster I need advice on how to connect my Technics SL-QL1 to my Unidisk SC. On the assumption that I need a phono stage, what about something like the Cambridge Audio Azur 551p or something similar. Don't want to spend a lot of money as it may come to nothing!

Thanks for any advice either way.

Stereo Active card for Katans

$

Hi,
Need some Advice here regards a pair of Active Stereo Bass & Treble cards I have...
In a nutshell ;
My cards have some branding on them saying Ninka...

Now I have some LK85's & LK140's that Definitely work if I use them with my Keilidh's.
But as those Katans are 8Ohms = they get the LK140 treatment so as to drive them, the 85's honestly drive the Keilidh's fine as their only 4Ohms like most Linn Speakers are.

Now I don't know about doing a quick trial & error style try out to see if these pair of "Ninka" branded Stereo cards work on my "Katan's" as Mint condition Katans are getting hard to find & I dearly love mine & wouldn't like to smoke them by attempting something that might harm them Wink

SO...

Does any1 from Linn Know or maybe a member who's went Active Katan know if a pair of Active Stereo Bass + Treble ""NINKA"" branded cards will work & make my KATANS Active using either LK140's or if really required I might fork out for a pair of Klouts if their needed for Active ?

I've tried searching around & received conflicting info TBH, so hence why I thought I'd ask in here as most members are more clued up than the average Joe who thinks their MR HI-FI Expert hehe...

As usual any help/ info provided would be GREATLY APPRECIATED Wink

[Kazoo Beta Bug] (two of everything)

Hi, great news and thanks for Kazoo. I couldn't resist and loaded kazoo over breakfast this morning, latest beta builds.
However all my albums throughout the all album choice are displaying two of every song, ie two number ones and two number twos and so on. I am running asset on a tranquil windows server, asset is premium version and I am pointing asset to my windiws 7 laptop which kazoo is running, maybe thus is why I have duplication. Obviously I don't get this with Kinsky. I'm rushing out to work now so will check things at weekend.
Just noticed while kazoo moves onto second number three say, it counts down the time on the timer but plays nothing
