Linn hi-fi upgrade suggestions

Hi, my current system is linn majik ds, lk85/kolektor/genki with PMC FB1.

Initially I had the ds connected via the koletor and changed it recently to be directly to the lk 85. Was really quite surprised at the difference this made which got me to thinking that its probably time to look at the rest of the equipment for upgrade which i bought in about 2000.

All my music is either flac or apple lossless so no intention of updating cd player. I’m not really into home cinema so no need for this to drive. i listen to mist types of music and more recently i’ve gotten into classic such as Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Mozart as i figure this is better music for the kids to listen too than my Oasis, Nirvana, Smiths etc.

Budget to be negotiated with the wife but looking at least at upgrading the amplification and potentially the speakers to bring things into lines with the ds player. Also likely to want to have music in my study too with the main system in the living room.

Any idea, thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

Cheers.

Kandid Torque Setting

I like to start this thread with the values which Thomas discovered and reported in another thread.

(2014-01-08 23:12)ThomasOK Wrote:  With my torque driver the Kandid is most musical at 1.0Nm - 5 notches. This is almost exactly .9Nm, maybe a notch above. (On my SR Torque driver each notch is in the range of 1.5 hundredths of a Nm.)

This is very close to the Akiva which uses similar threaded stainless steel inserts for the screws, although those on the Kandid are even beefier than on the Akiva. Both cartridges sound best pretty close to .9Nm although the Akiva is usually better a couple of notches higher. This is assuming an Ekos SE. With other arms it could vary a bit although it should still be close to the same.

This weekend I have done several testings with the Kandid torque.
I have done three series and compared the results:

0,90* - 0,915 - 0,93 - 0,95 Nm
*gives the best result, listened further with 0,91 Nm.

0,89 - 0,90* - 0,91 Nm
*gives the best result, listened further with 0,905 Nm.

0,895 - 0,90* - 0,905 Nm
*gives the best result, listened further with ~ 0,9025 Nm.

I can confirm Thomas findings.

Under 0,90 Nm the music gets confused and obscured. The interaction between the musicans isn't clear noticeable. It seems to be boring.

Above 0,90 Nm it is getting more analytic and the musical context seems to be disturbed. Relaxed listening isn't easy. Nuances of a voice are getting lost.

At 0,90 Nm everything is more consistent. The musicians are articulated and still playing together.

After listening for a while I come to conclusion, in the moment I rate 0,90 Nm the best torque for the Kandid in an EkosSE. Maybe it will change in three weeks, when my retailer will service my LP12 with some new parts.

Rille

What's up with this Ekos SE?

So I've taken a chance on this and have bought this for an amount I'm comfortable with. In terms of bearings and SQ all seems as it should be but there is an issue. You'll see straight away from this photo what it is:

The headshell end is some 6mm or so lower than the pillar end and, as far as I can tell, it's all related to the bracket that holds the anti-skate / cueing lever / arm rest. This is held by 2 T6 torx bolts and they seem to be secure. Nothing is obviously bent but clearly something is out of whack.

Now I haven't decided yet whether to get it checked out by Linn although I think that would be the sensible thing to do. Anyone come across anything like this before or have any thoughts (polite ones please)?

By the way the cartridge that's in the picture is an old Arkiv sans cantilever that I was using as balance weight to initially test. Anyone know the trade-in value for this against a Kandid?

All bloody day I have been playing with speaker positions. We finally finished decorating my music room yesterday, so today was re in-state the kit. Everything went back into position easily......except the speakers, they just didnt sound good at all, so, its out with the laser measure, measuring tape, screwdrivers, spanners and start, adjust the feet for level again, then racke back angle, then move everything around until it gets to sound at least somewhat decent......then Bl***** 4 hours tweaking, BUT, at last it sounds half decent. Just need the phono to be on for about 48 hours to settle down......my walkman was never this complicated.

.jpg  IMG_5909a.jpg (Size: 683.8 KB / Downloads: 8) Hi to everybody, this is my first post and I would explain an issue I'm experiencing after moving in new house.

My gear:

Rotel Rsp-1098 pre
2x Linn AV5125 (with aktiv cards)
Linn Ninka
Linn Trikan
Sub Definitive Technologies pf1500tl plus

Since 2006 all gear was in my home theatre room and everything worked perfectly. After moving to new house, I unmount the all system and set up again, but I'm experiencing an overheating problem with av5125.
they get really hot after 1 hour or less at very low volume, and I don't know if I mess something in wiring.

I follow the same setup, just I miss the rear surround speakers that in this room i can't place.

I've enclosed two photos.
The red wire is for treble, the blue for middle, and white the bass
the trikan has only red and white attached.

any suggestion?

sorry but it's a long time since I've set up all the gear!

thanks in advance

Multiroom Wishes

I wish multiroom DS systems, and the songcast source, were made more manageable.

It's not exactly hard to use now, but it is a faff. Here's an everyday example: wake up in the morning, want to make coffee in the kitchen and drink it in the living room, listening to radio 4 all the while.

Steps:

  1. Open Kinsky
  2. Select bedroom DS (as want to get it playing there first)
  3. Select radio 4
  4. Set volume
  5. select kitchen DS
  6. Select Songcast source
  7. Select bedroom DS as songcast sender
  8. Set kitchen volume
  9. Select living room DS
  10. select Songcast source
  11. select bedroom or kitchen DS as songcast sender
  12. set living room volume

What I would like to be able to do is preconfigure these settings such that all I would need to do in the morning would be to select Source: Radio -> Radio 4 and select a preset, perhaps called something like 'Whole House - Breakfast'. I'd then like to be able to turn the whole house up or down by spinning a single volume control.

Then, once I'm done listening, instead of navigating to the primary songcast sender (the bedroom DS) and stopping it, I'd like to be able to end the 'Whole House - Breakfast' listening session. This would return the DSs involved to their previous source, so that they're ready to play from e.g. the Playlist or Radio sources, and not remaining on the stopped Songcast Bedroom source.

Of course there's a number of ways to skin a cat and this is just an example to illustrate the point. There's also a large number of scenarios to handle, e.g. what happens if someone else turns down the volume in just one room which is being governed by the 'Whole House - Breakfast' session? Not difficult to solve in itself in my case, but covering all the scenarios well is definitely a significant project.

One of the great advantages of DSs (and networked audio generally) over asynchronous USB DACs is the possibility for multiroom. I've never used Knect but I get the sense that it required some effort to set up but was then relatively easy to use. It seems that in the vast majority of households, there is a broad spectrum of techno-patience, leading to aberrations such as this:

A layer of management placed around the Songcast source, which makes multiroom really easy to use, would be excellent. There's usually at least one person in a household who would be capable of doing the setup, and failing that, a dealer could do it. Then, everyone can use it. Not only that, but I myself don't want to spend one minute turning on the radio in every room. I'd like it to be as quick turning on the whole house as it is to turn on one room. And I imagine that dealers would love to show something like this off.

I'm certain that something like this has already been considered, but though the DS is quite a mature platform, and even though Songcast has been out for a while, I've seen no mention of improvements to multiroom, including in any of the Kazoo talk or at the preview at the 40th (and I didn't think to ask). Is there much of an appetite for it?

Cheers,

Matt

Replacing Intek with Majik

Hi Folks
I have a wee front room system that currently consists of Mimik>Intek>Index (bi-wired). I'm considering replacing the Intek with a first generation Majik (in the LK-style box) and am just wondering what I might expect in terms of improvement if I did.
I imagine there would be some, but would it be subtle, appreciable, dramatic?

New Vinyl passion plinths.. opinions

I am currently working with a highly skilled bespoke wood specialist who is a retired PHD lecturer to produce the highest quality plinths possible for the LP-12 this is done simply from his love of working with wood and his vast knowledge in physics.. our first prototype will soon be ready to show off.. it has taken many hours on the planer just to find the grain pattern he is happy with it is in a holographic finish maple with ebony inlays I am hoping to get a little feedback from this forum and will be posting pictures as soon as it is assembled assuming this post is received in a positive manner.. I am not pushing my goods just looking for feedback on quality it has taken me 3 years to find the right man for the job in the long run the wait has been worthwhile after seeing some of his commissions I think you will be in for a treat.... we should have the first unit complete with internal carbon bracing ready within the next 2 weeks I look forward to posting the pictures and hope that some of you will find this of interest...

Pro-ject 9CC tonearm in old LP12

$

Hi, I'm new to this forum and maybe this have been addressed before.
I have a circa late 80's Sondek LP12, SR#78,453, and it is fitted with an Basik plus tonearm and Adikt cart. The anti-skating dial in the Basik Plus is broken, so I need to change the tonearm. As I'm on a budget, and don't want to risk buying old tonearms on Ebay, having read here all the posible issues with the bearings, etc. I'm thinking about buying a new Pro-ject Carbon 9CC tonearm,as in the the Magic model. My question is, will I need a new arm board for the Pro-ject? I know that it is "standard Linn mount"but I'm thinking about the overhang, as the Basik Plus is a longer arm.
Can someone, plase confirm this? Is this a good upgrade from the Basic Plus? Please advise.

Service & Upgrade For 1992 LP12

Hi all, new member here and enjoying reading up on everything I've missed over the last 10 years since my LP12 and system went into hibernation.

A house move next month will finally allow space to have a system again but I can see I've got a lot of learning to do as far as the upgrade path goes. First on the list is Peter at Cymbiosis for a service, and I'm sure he will have good recommendations for me, but as I'm excited I thought I'd jump the gun a bit and ask your opinions on what I should be thinking about.

The LP12 was bought ex-dem from Griffin Audio in Birmingham (RIP Bob) in 1993 and its box shows delivery from Linn in January 1992 with a serial number of 088554. This I think means it pre-dates the Cirkus bearing and from what I've read so far that seems to be the starting point.

It has an Akito arm and an Ortofon MC15 Super II cartridge that is probably a bit long in the tooth now. Partnering kit is an Audiolab 8000A amp and new Dali Zensor 1s on stands with Linn K20 cable.

Budget is, well, I don't know. Whatever is good value for money I guess.

Laptop audio question.

Hi Linnland,

In my second system I use a laptop as the only source. Is it in any way possible for me to control what's played on the laptop remotely with an android tablet? I don't want an external drive or to go down the streamer route. I'm just wondering if it's doable with the right software.

Cheers

Majik-I as headphone amp

Hi everyone,

I recently replaced my Majik-I (current model) with an Exotik/DA and AV5125 and I am now playing with the idea of buying headphones. Since the Exotik does not have a headphone input I was wondering if I can use the Majik-I as an interim solution by connecting the tape out of the Exotik with one of the source inputs of the Majik-I and then usw The Majik's headphone input. Would this be possible?

Thanks
