Moderation and Banned Forum Members

Hi Folks,

When it comes to moderation of this forum, we take a very light touch approach. We trust our community members to regulate themselves.

If we think a member's behaviour falls below the standards we hope for — we talk to them about it — we drop them a message or an email and ask them to edit a post, or clear things up.

Occasionally we may also post on a thread and ask the community to get back on track and encourage users to treat others as they would like to be treated themselves.

On a very rare occasion we may lock a thread if it's getting out of hand. We try not to do this, just like we rarely remove posts; only taking them down if they are in clear breach of our forum guidelines which do not permit inappropriate, sexually orientated, abusive, hateful, racist, homophobic, slanderous, or threatening material that could be considered invasive of a persons privacy, or which otherwise violate any kind of law. We don't permit direct selling or eBay links on the forum either of course, but we're not in the business of censorship.

To date, with the exception of spammers and automated bots, we have only ever had to permanently ban one member of the forum. That's since the forum started in 2008. Not a bad record.

That was after years of dialogue with the member, gentle encouragement, warnings, periods of pre-moderation, temporary bans, and a myriad of other solutions aimed at keeping things harmonious and inclusive.

Decisions surrounding these solutions are not taken unilaterally. The forums are run by a team of Linn staff from the R&D department: each and every time these decisions have to be made there is a flurry of communication and meetings held. it's important to us. But it should also be noted that this is precious time taken out of the development of new and existing products.
