What is your 'serious' Hi-Fi history - Linn/Naim etc?

What is your history of ownership of top Hi-Fi products such as Linn/Naim etc?

My first 'serious' kit was in 1987. It consisted of:

LP12 in black, Ittok, K9, later upgraded the following year to Ekos, Troika and Lingo.

LK1 and LK280, later upgraded to Aktiv and Sparks a couple of years later.

Isobariks DMS/PMS in black - one of the last versions with the huge crossovers in the stands, later went Aktiv with them with 3 x LK280s/Sparks.

In the early 90s, sold all my Linn kit and vinyl for a very basic system.

In 1995 went over to Naim with the following:
CD3.5
NAC102 and NAPSC
NAP180

and Royd speakers.

2003, upgraded to Naim CDX2 and later added an XPS2 PS
2005, bought Linn Keltiks and 4 x Klouts second hand.
2010, went for biggest upgrade yet with an ADS/0, later Dynamiked, and most of my current sig

Upgraded with Klimax crossovers and KDS/0/KK1/D all in black with Linn agreeing eventually to refinishing/upgrading my KXOs in black to match the rest of my system, which were a couple of 4200/Ds
Upgraded to KDS/1 when it was released.

What are your Linn etc serious Hi-Fi experiences/history of ownership? Smile

LK1 / LK280 Connection Questions

Hi all, I'm glad to have found this forum and hope you can help me with a connection query.

We've inherited some very nice Linn bits and pieces but I'm having trouble connecting them and getting any output.

We have an LK1 preamp with LK280 power amp, and ProAc Response Two speakers.

I've connected both preamp and power amp to power supplies, both have lit up and seem to be working fine. For example, I can change input selection on the LK1 as per the manual.

I've connected a Meridian 506 CD player to the Aux input with a 3 pin XLR.

I've connected the preamp to the power amp with two 3 pin XLRs, output 1 to right input, output 2 to left input.

And I've connected the power amp to the speakers with banana clips.

But there is no sound! I hope you can help me, I've probably made a really basic error... Tongue

For example, the speakers have four inputs for bi-wiring; I have connected the + cable to the terminal marked 'BASS' and the - to the terminal marked 'TWEETER'. From my understanding of the LK1 manual this is correct, but I may not have understood about the inverting of the phase signal?

I'm currently swapping around connections to see if I've made a mistake somewhere, but any help will be most appreciated, I'd love to get this up and running! I can take some pictures of the connections if it helps.

Thanks!!

Hello,
For those who have Qobuz, do you use Kazoo to stream the music or Qobuz connect?

I wonder which one is better for the sound, if there's any difference.

Why no updates to the Klimax 320A/D ?

Hi

Some years ago I bought into the world of Klimax components, partly due to the sonic excellence, and partly to the heritage of "upgradability"

My streamer began its life as a DS(1) and was rebuild to a KEDSM and finally Katalyst`id, a worthwhile and rewarding path of upgrades, not cheep but good ROI (return of investment) in my opinion

During this time I have used my Klimax 320A/D, but no upgrades available, it seems that this is the Klimax part that God, sorry Linn forgot, Why?

I am not the guy with the lastest smartphone/tv set/or whatever, I don´t want to leave this world with a big footprint of electronic scarp after me, on the other hand Exact/Katalyst is intriguing, so Linn:

Will there be any updates available to the Klimax 320D/A and if not Why?

Keep the music flowing, and

Best Regards
Bo

Klimax DSM 'vanished' from Kazoo/Konfig

Hi Guys,

I have a bit of a puzzling effect here, maybe someone can help me with it:
I've been running a Klimax DSM renew on a wireless router (no I don't want to discuss network philosophy here Wink) which is a WDS repeater of my primary wireless internet access. Worked quite nice for several months, I've been using Kazoo and Konfig from my PC and Kazoo on my Android phone to control the Klimax.

Now, after a firmware update on my primary router (Asus), Konfig and Kazoo (on both devices) simply won't recognize the Klimax any more.

I've double-checked: it's on the network, it has a proper IP and netmask, I can ping it and even access it via the web interface. And the Klimax itself can access the internet, no problem.

Router settings were the same before and after the update, and of course I've tried the usual: reboot and power-off the Klimax, reboot and power-off both routers, renew all DHCP leases, flush the DNS cache... I'm running out of ideas.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any idea how Kazoo/Konfig discover devices? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated :-)

Regards,
Thomas

IP Settings:

Different Kabers

Hi I have two pairs of Kabers which are new to me.
One is marked Active although it has links and crossovers. The other is passive with links and crossovers.
The "active" one looks to me as if it was active but has been fitted with the correct crossovers as the second crossover is screwed close to the first crossover in what I believe from the passive one to be in the wrong place.

The "active" one has a hole in the internal front panel leading through to the front lower baffle. whereas the passive one is solid.

My query is, are the active cabinets built differently and does this hole enhance the bass. The active versions go lower I believe.

Hi All,
Kazoo App was working just fine yesterday. Today I upgraded Android version of my smartphone and it showed white blank screen on startup.
I tried closing the app and reopening the app but it's same.
What to do now?
Update: - I reinstalled the app and it started working now.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought that this video might be interesting.

There's a video featuring the #1 US turntable guru - Michael Fremer. He has assembled a group of hardware parts and has built a "cavitation" record cleaning system. Cavitation uses just pure water which is carbonated. The bubbles somehow clean the record. A system can be cobbled together for about $700. The state of the art machine is over $4000.

One of his options can clean 12 records at a time.

Why does my Linn Exotik Dynamik sound too bright?

$

Hi all

My back end system comprises 3 x Klouts (aktiv) feeding a pair of Keltiks (aktiv) with Linn interconnects and speaker cabling. I originally had a Kairn Pro as my preamp and purchased a AV5103 to modernise the appearance and attain some digital inputs for greater flexibility. Both sounded really good but somewhat different and in the end I sold both and purchased an Exotik with the Dynamik power supply upgrade on the premise it was going to be a significant upgrade and better marry up with the quality of the Klouts/Keltiks.

In relation to my Exotik/D, the music is detailed but the treble frequency (the higher the volume, the more obvious it is) becomes overly bright and a tad bit harsh to the extent that it becomes unenjoyable to listen to. And right now I wish I had my old looking Kairn back or the AV5103 despite its annoying soft touch buttons - because at least they sounded great. I got a friend (albeit no expert) to listen as well who heard my system before and after and they also agree. To me, it was obvious straight away and quite a let down.

I telephoned Linn for some much needed advice and they told me to make sure the setting for 'Analogue Group' was set to 'None' and I did. They also told me to try Analogue inputs 4 to 6 to double make sure and I did, but alas no change????

I have been through the settings many times and cant see anything wrong with them? I'm now wondering if its a simple case that the older pure analogue Klouts do not marry up well with the newer generation preamp?

I would very much like to hear from anyone with similar experiences and anyone who can solve the mystery of why, this supposed upgrade, sounds less than impressive?

Many many thanks!!!

Which speaker should I choose instead of the one I have?

Hi!
I currently use a pair of Totem model one signature, which have not been measured by Linn.
But I was thinking that the Dynaudio Focus 110 looks similar.
Could I use that speaker in SO instead?

What are your thoughts?

Akurate DS "wireless" setup

Hi, today I am getting a second hand Akurate DS/0 to replace my current "mac mini with external usb hd + dac" setup. I am really looking forward to getting the DS up and running, but I have a few newbie questions as I am new to streaming, and since it is impossible for me to connect the DS to my router via ethernet cable.

1) Is there a way to connect the DS and setting up a HD with music, preferably without having too buy to much new gear?

2) I understand that the DS can be connected via an Apple Airport, and I have also read that an airport and a USB/firewire drive can act as a NAS disk. Is this correct and/or recommended? And is it possible to use the same Airport device for both these tasks, or will I need two separate units for this? E.g. connect my existing external HD to the same airport device that is connected to the DS?

My budget is relatively tight for this (as I splurged on the DS :-), so the more I can use of my existing equipment the better. Any suggestions are warmly welcome, as I would love to get the DS up and running) PS. I have been looking at excisting forum posts on the subject, but have still not found the answer to this.

Hello

I have noticed that with bandcamp.com some of the FLAC downloads are only slightly bigger files than the MP3 version.
Am I right in thinking that these FLAC downloads are potentially just converted MP3 files and offer very little, if any sonic benefit over just straight MP3?
If this is the case then it would be much better if you could get this information before having to purchase the albums.

... Sorry if this is a stupid question Smile

urika II vs urika

urika II vs urika better or different?

When and why did Linn & Naim fallout after their alleged 'agreement' was broken?

$
0
0
According to my dealer in the late 80s, Linn had an 'agreement' with Naim that Naim would build the electronics, and Linn, the rest.

Naim built the active crossover for the Isobariks with their famous 'six pack' of NAP135s and NAP250s

Then along came Linn with their LK1 and LK2 and their own Aktiv crossovers. This was all allegedly in the late 80s

Who was at fault and what really happened? Even today, there are lots of dealers that wont deal with Linn. In fact the Audio-T chain refused to deal with Linn about 15 years ago saying they were too difficult to deal with according to one of my ex-dealers.

What went on?
