Exaktbox downgrade alongside Davaar 60?

$
0
0
Yesterday, I upgraded my DSMs from Davaar 59 to 60. Both were fully up to date in September when I last visited Konfig. Before doing the work, I upgraded to the latest Konfig.

The ADSM/1 is connected to a Klimax Exaktbox, which drives my Keltiks via 4200s. When I looked at the Update page, I was offered 2 updates - the expected Davaar 60 for the DSM plus an unexpected filter update (Keltik Bi-Wire 007/015). So, I used Update All to apply everything. No errors were reported and at a cursory first listen everything sounds OK. However, I don't understand what happened with the Exaktbox - if the reported version numbers are correct, it has had a downgrade!

Before the updates:
  • Klimax Exaktbox Firmware: 19.0
  • Exakt Fallback Firmware: 3.0
  • Exakt Compiler: 21.0
  • Keltik Dimensions: 2.0
  • Keltik Variant: Keltik Bi-wired Bass with Mid-range 007 & Tweeter 015 Filter by Linn (5.0)

After the updates:
  • Klimax Exaktbox Firmware: 17.0
  • Exakt Fallback Firmware: 3.0
  • Exakt Compiler: 19.0
  • Keltik Dimensions: 2.0
  • Keltik Variant: Keltik Bi-wired Bass with Mid-range 007 & Tweeter 015 Filter by Linn (5.0 (independent highest frequency modelling))

Please can somebody explain what is going on here?

Thanks

ADS upgrade

Hello,
I'd like to know if in case of upgrade of an old ADS, if Linn updates also the case or just the motherboard?
would that be the same if you upgrade from an ADS to the lastest spec of ADSM?

Thanks,

Does LP12 Fit On Quadrapire Q4 Shelf

Hi there

I have my LK equipment on a Quadraspire Q4 shelf and am looking at getting another LP12, after I foolishly sold my previous one.

Will the Sondek fit on the Quadrapire shelf? From measurements, it looks like the feet will sit on the outer edges of the shelf, but I was wondering if anyone had actually done it.

Confusion and possible error in Device Delay default information

I hesitate to say this is an error. Either it is or I am stupid.

If you go into Konfig, Akurate DS Configuration,
then the Device menu
then find Delay (ms)
then click the adjacent question mark.

It says the available range is 15 to 2000 ms
It also says the default setting is 0.

Linn chappies, please correct or explain. I think you mean the default is 15. It is not possible to set it to zero.

Just a tiny thing but you want a perfect product, don't you

Worth pushing the boat out for a NAS?

Hello,
I have many upgrades on the horrizzon but am currently without a NAS.
Is anything with sufficient HD space ok or am i best off getting a decent NAZ?
I'd like a QNAP Ts-253a or TS- 251+ but is it easy to live with an older slower NAS?
Is there any difference in sound quality?

Thanks

Artikulat 345 failure/upgrade

I have an older Artikulat 345 which I use with a pair of 320As. I came back after a several week vacation and when I powered the sub on there was a Pfft sound and the smell of smoke. Needless to say, no sound has been heard from it since, aside from the echo of my sobs.

As the warranty had expired and I live in the middle of nowhere, I took it to a local hifi repair shop (recommended my my local Linn dealer) to have a look at it but they were unable to repair it.

If I upgrade this to a Klimax 345 will that replace both the power and amplification section and thus likely fix the problem? I understand this can be done by a local dealer? I'd like to get the upgrade anyway, but I'm loathe to fix something that's going to be thrown out.

Failing that, does Linn have a supply of swapped Klimax upgrade modules that could be used to fix my 345?

Shortened Linn silvers

One often sees Linn Silver phono interconnects for sale in a certain place shortened to 60cm. Is there any reason not to use shortened cables of this sort provided it's been done properly? 1.2m is often too long and it seems to me that shorter a shorter version would not only be cheaper, but easier to live with. Am I being silly?

Request to add cic-related functions

LINN

Request to add additional functions to control HDMI:

1. Main request:

Please add functions for controlling Power on or Power off via HDMI links, e.g., “Cec Power ON” (Enabled or Disabled) and “Cec Power OFF” (Enabled or Disabled).

2. Explanation of configuration of my system:

- Two Blu-ray/HDD recorders (DIGA, Panasonic; hereinafter “DIGA”) are connected to HDMI input 2 and HDMI input 3 of an OLED TV (EZ1000, Panasonic; hereinafter “TV”).

- LINN Akurate Exact DSM (hereinafter, Akurate) is connected to HDMI input 1 of the OLED TV in view of the ARC function. I recently updated HDMI board of Accurate to 2.0.

- NAS, Apple TV, Fire TV, PS3 and PS 4 are connected to Akurate.

- Using Konfig, I have set “Turn HDMI Off in Sleep” as “NO”, “Cec” as “Enabled”. and “Cec Auto Source Select” as “Enabled”.

3. Problems that I want to change:

- I want to use Akurate (Akubarik) only when I want to use. In other words, I want to use DIGA and TV generally without using Akurate (Akubarik). However, when I turn on DIGA (or TV), Akurate automatically wakes up, which I do not prefer.
- If I change the setting, i.e., make “Cec” of Config Software to “Disabled”, I can fix this problem but, if so, another problem occurs, i.e., I cannot automatically select source. That is, use of remote controllers of Apple TV, Fire TV, PS3 and PS4 cannot change the source automatically (without depending whether Akurate is on or off).
- On the other hand, I want to automatically turn off Akurate when I turn off TV.

4. Proposal:

In Config software HDMI setting, please add two options. Then, HDMI setting should be:

Turn HDMI Off in Sleep (Enabled or Disabled)
Cec(Enabled or Disabled)
Cec Auto Source Select (Enabled or Disabled)
Cec Power ON Link (Enabled or Disabled)
Cec Power OFF Link (Enabled or Disabled)

By selecting “Cec Power ON Link” as “Disabled” and “Cec Power Off Link” as “Enabled”, the problem mentioned above does not occur.

Ideal way of use:

By selecting “Cec Power ON Link” as “Disabled” and “Cec Power Off Link” as “Enabled”, I wish to use the system as follows:

- Generally, I set Akurate to be sleeping. When I use DIGA, I turn on DIGA, which automatically turns on TV (Akurate is not automatically turned on and thus I use TV speakers without using Akubarik). After using DIGA, I turn off TV, which also turns off DIGA.
- When I wish to use a device (Apple TV, Fire TV, PS3 or PS4), I push “Home” button etc. of one device, say, Apple TV to (1) automatically turn on TV and (2) make Akurate to select Apple TV as the source (while Akurate is sleeping). Then, by pushing “Home” button of FireTV, I can change the source to FireTV (while Akurate is sleeping). After use of the device, I turn off TV, which also turns off the device.
- When I want to use Akurate (Akubarik), I use Kazoo to turn on Akurate manually. Automatic turning on function is not preferable. At this point, TV does not automatically turn on and thus I can play musics from NAS without waking up TV. (On the other hand, those who want to make Akurate to automatically turn on can set “Cec Power ON Link” to be “Enabled”).
- After manually turning on Akurate, I may push “Home” button etc. of one device, say, Apple TV to (1) turn on Apple TV, (2) turn on TV, and (3) make Akurate to select Apple TV as the source. After watching Apple TV, I turn off TV, which automatically turns off both of Akurate and Apple TV. (On the other hand, those who want to manually turn off Akurate can set “Cec Power OFF Link” to be “Disabled”).

I would appreciate your consideration of version up of software to achieve above.

LG Oled b6v and Linn DSM HDMI-CEC issue

Hello,

I have LG oled55b6v tv and Linn Akurate DSM with HDMI 2.0 upgrade. I have lot of HDMI-CEC issues. DSM goes to standby when i power off tv, but never wake up from from standby when I power on tv. CEC auto source select doesn't seem to work ok with LG's Simplink.

Also sometimes when i use another HDMI-source from DSM and I switch TV to live picture sound hangs from DSM. I have to use another source from DSM like Radio to reset DSM and then when I switch back to HDMI sound is working. This happens even when CEC auto source select is disabled. Maybe Linn DSM is not compatible with LG OLED TV:s.

Is here in forum anybody with working combination of LG OLED tv and Linn DSM with HDMI 2.0-upgrade or have same kind of issues with HDMI-CEC?

Motherboard is already replaced with new one in my LG OLED TV. So it's not hardware issue. I also have tried several expensive HDMI-cables without luck.

The latest release of Konfig V4.35 provides owners of Linn Exaktbox with two new features for Exakt Filters.

Update 1: we've added pictorial selection to the Standard Filters tab (shown below). Please note there are no changes to Linn Exakt filters themselves.

Update2: we've added the ability to view, acquire, and select Exakt Filters designed by third party manufacturers and acoustic engineers.

This mechanism will allow selected third party manufacturers and acoustic engineers to release their Exakt.Design filters to both retailers and customers over the coming months.

Accessed in the same Konfig screen shown above, the second tab "Exakt.Design Filters", will list the available filters alongside information on how to select them.

To access the new Exakt.Design filters, please ensure you update Konfig to the latest version from Thursday 14th December.

[macOS Kazoo 4.11.252 bug] Silent crashes switching renderers

$

Kazoo silently crashes when switching OpenHome renderer in the top bar, in a certain number of scenarios.

I've seen this happening when the switch is:

1. OH renderer managed by BubbleUPnP Server > Linn DS
2. Linn DS > OH renderer managed by BubbleUPnP Server
3. OH renderer managed by BubbleUPnP Server > OH renderer managed by BubbleUPnP Server

I could not test DS > DS as I do not have currently 2 DS on my network, but since it is the most common case, maybe it does not happen.

How to reprod:

1. Install BubbleUPnP Server if necessary (https://bubblesoftapps.com), create an OpenHome renderer from an UPnP AV renderer (or a Chromecast) in the Renderers tab

2. Launch Kazoo, select a DS as the current renderer and just go into the "TuneIn" folder

3. In the top bar's center, switch to an OH renderer managed by BubbleUPnP Server

=> Instacrash, Kazoo window disappear silently

This crash also happens when Kazoo UI is in other locations such as TIDAL, Qobuz, Tune In, Calm Radio. And also when when the renderer switch is reversed. The crash never happens if Kazoo is in a media server's browse tree (eg "My Music" hierarchy), the "Radio" or "My Playlists", "Inputs" folder (although when the switch is done in these folders, Kazoo displays a spinning wheel instead of a message that this source is not supported for the new renderer: BubbleUPnP Server OH renderers only support the Playlist source).

Linnovation

A week ago, I visited the Linn factory, just outside Glasgow, as part of a Linn factory tour and music demo session.

I went we a group of Linn owners, that are passionate about music, and the latest developments in products that push the envelop in sound quality and product design.

I have been to the factory 3 time before, and had been very impressed by the facilities and the employees.

But what has really impacted me this time, is reflecting on Linn’s emphasize on precision, development , innovation, and creating new HiFi products, where none existed before. I like to call it Linnovation!!!

The Linn factory has further added to their impressive array of state of the art production equipment, in the past year, further adding to their in house capabilities.

But looking at their history, until the present day, Linn have developed so many innovative ideas, and put them out to market.

In many cases, these are some of the best, if not the best sounding HiFi component’s in their categories on the market today.

The iconic Linn turntable, was Linn’s first HiFi product, and turned the industry upside down, with its precision, detail and musicality. The evolution of this product and its improvements in sound quality over the years is impressive. It feeds well to Linn’s philosophy of “source first”

Linn products such as the CD-12 continued that tradition, as well as Linn’s unidisc series of universal disc players, with outstanding sound quality.

The implementation of activ driven speakers, Tune-boxes and others.

There are many other Linn products in the last 45 years that have been a breakthrough in design and implementation. Perhaps someone can add to this thread as to what products and ideas these were, as my history with Linn products only goes back about 15 years, with my fist Linn product, the Movie Classic.

The last 10 years or so for Linn have been stellar, in terms of Linnovation.

The invention of an extremely high quality sounding digital streamer has revolutionized the HiFi industry, and changed the way we listen to music. Now able to play from our extensive selection, simply choosing to create a playlist from the ease of sitting on the couch, touching an iPad device to listen and control our music.

Then came the advent of Exakt technology, Space optimization and Katalyst technology, which have each taken sound quality of music to levels unheard of before.

I love the fact that firmware updates over the last few years have created massive improvements in sound quality with a simple download, to upgrade the speakers and electronics. Big Grin

The factory visit has reemphasized the incredible journey that Linn have been on.

A friend of mine came over to hear my Linn system yesterday afternoon. He has followed my progress over the years in sound quality of my Linn system.

After listening to a selection of music, he exclaimed. “This is the first time I have ever heard any HiFi system sound like the real performer is in the room”

I guess that says it all. Big Grin

Here is to many more years of Linnovation!!!

Akubarik Exact Filter by Linn (5.0 (independent highest frequency modelling)
Akubarik Dimensions (2.0)
Exact Compiler (21.0)

Network cables and 'Exakt Link' Cables

$
0
0
Are these in effect one and the same thing?

In other words, is the cable that is in use between my Ethernet over mains to DSM the same thing as the DSM to the Exaktbox?

I am confused first by the name 'Exakt Link' which suggests they are different (although the Linn site suggests that they are Cat 5 or Cat 6 ethernet cables) and the in/out pictograms. Most patch cables that I have seen are terminated (RJ45) the same on both ends. Is this what I need to connect the DSM to the Exaktbox - a simple RJ45 terminated patch cable?

The 'in' and 'out' suggests that the cables are terminated differently at each end and the Klimax diagram in Linn docs reinforces this. Additionally it refers to an Exaktlink from the DSM and a network cable to the DSM.

Can someone please clarify this in simple terms!

SO and pre out in ADSM

Hi all

I didn't find nothing on this forum regarding the thread subject.

For the front headphone out and for all the digital outs of ADSM SO seems not applicabile.

But it is not clear for me if it is possible to turn off SO only for pre out (when set in Konfig to fixed level) just in case you want to connect an external headphones amplifier and do not want to turn on and off via Konfig SO when you want to listent to heaphones.

It is also not clear if for headphones out (or pre out fixed) the pre-amp section af ADSM is all analogue, all digital, analogue only for analogue inputs, and if this can be set via Konfig.

Newbie LP12 owner - servicing advice please

Hello,

I recently puchased a secondhand LP12 which was in great condition and played great to my ears but it hadn’t been used for a few years, so thought it prudent to take it to my local authorised seller for a service.

The service has been carried out but I’ve been given a list of recommended work, which comprises of the following:

Worn motor which they may be able to free but recommend replacing (£200 inc. belt etc.)
Ortofon 150 stylus showing signs of wear plus body loose - recomment replacing stylus or replace with red or blue mm cartridge (£45-£155)
New 5 layer arm board £75
Labour on above £75

This was quite a bit more than I was expecting for a service and just looking for opinions on whether other owners would have all this work carried out?

Thanks

Ian

Odd one -DAC on a Classik

Ok I have acquired from a generous friend an unwanted Audiolab M DAC..

The spare set up is a LK Classik a couple of LK140s and Katans with a sub whose name has slipped my name (and I cant be bothered to move the armchair in the kitchen)

The snug area in the kitchen is the spare hi fi area.. Its also the main PC area.. Can I actually make use of this to stream from the PC workstation (Windows 10).. Also am I correct in thinking I could send the Classiks digital output to the DAC and then to the LK140s (If thats an improvement)

All this technology has blinded me.

Any help, advice etc would be welcome

Just to add a little more confusion I also run a project turntable and phono amp into the aux of the classik - people like to play vinyl when they come for dinner and this saves me having to take them to the main set up.

my second system is now Sneaky directly driving Katan.

Would it be a great upgrade if I buy a used LK85 with Activ cards to add?

Thanks guys.
