Even though the end of the road for CD Players people with old or broken players can get the same discount value against Majik -£500, Akurate -£1000 and Klimax -£2000 turntables so nearly a free Krystal at Akurate level and half an Ekos SE/1 at Klimax if you'd not noticed.

Static electricity with the new style felt mat.

I received the new, smaller felt mat with my Radikal upgrade. It seems much worse than the old one in adhering when you lift a record off. Sometimes it stays attached until you peel it off, other times it will fall off and flutter to the floor where you're no longer sure which side is up. The old style mat went all the way to the edge of the outer platter making it easy to put two fingers on when you lifted a record. The new one ends before the record edge and no contact is possible until it's above the spindle. I assume any manner of affixing the mat to the platter is frowned upon as well as marking the mat to indicate which side is up. Using a carbon cleaning brush doesn't seem to help. I'd be willing to invest in a Zerostat if that would improve things.

I'd be interested to know the reason for the smaller size mat. Perhaps they have decided it's not needed until inside the run in grooves and are trying to save felt. If so, that's a shame.

Exakt 350s Katalyst Upgrade

When the Katalyst upgrade for the E350s was announced a few months back I tried hard to ignore it. I was finding it hard to justify £6,800 to Mrs. G. She pointed out that this wouldn't be the end of it, surely Linn would come out with something better in a year or two? Wise words indeed and probably true but then if we all worried about things like that we wouldn't be in this game would we! I rather rashly decided to order the upgrade on the back of the enthusiastic reviews I'd read on this very forum. I decided to trade a popularity downgrade with the Mrs. G for a popularity upgrade with my dealer. The issue was who was the best dealer to use? I live on the Hampshire coast and we're a bit short of dealers here. I have previously used dealers who are willing to travel a bit but I was keen to try and use someone a bit more local. Hidden Systems has had some good press here recently and I had met Chris Fuller a couple of times so I decided he was the best, close to local, bet and duly contacted him to discuss and order. I should say that I was pretty happy with my system prior to this and my 520 system had also received admiring comments and approving looks from the non hi fi fraternity. My only concern in the case of both the systems was I felt it would be helpful to get some expert assistance in tweaking the Space settings.

The great day came when the upgrade was delivered and the opportunity was also taken to cure my 350s of the clicking some users had complained about. I didn't notice this until I moved house about a year ago and then the problem occurred from time to time. Once the upgraded boards were installed we fired up the system. Certainly considerably more detail, particularly on vocals that had perhaps been a bit "shouty" in the past. I commented to Chris on a Roxy Music track we were listening to that some extra instruments appeared to have appeared! We made some alterations to the Space settings and I was pretty happy with the result at the end of it. I certainly felt that classical music benefited significantly and having visited DavidHB in the past and knowing his love for classical music I was thinking he would probably appreciate the upgrade when the Akurate Exaktbox version is released. We finished the install with a promise from Chris to come back "on the bike" once the upgrade had been run in, to fully optimise both the systems. I listened to the system a fair bit. Was it my imagination or was the sound improving over time. I had some reservations about the way the bass sounded on some music and this partially dissipated over time but I did make some more adjustments to the Space settings so it could have been a bit of both.

I was away in France for 6 weeks having had the upgrade in place for maybe a couple of weeks and being away from your system for a while is certainly a good way of listening with a fresh pair of ears when you return. I also had my ears cleaned out in the interim for good measure. My local surgery doesn't do this any more but they refer you to an audiologist who charges £35 for 1 ear or £55 for 2. Ever a man for a bargain, I pushed the boat out and had them both done. Returning from France I cued up some music. Hmmm that sounds pretty good - mind you, I hadn't heard anything resembling a decent hi fi system for 6 weeks! Right, where's that Fuller fellow's number again! I contacted Chris and arranged a visit which would be best accomplished on "the bike." When said bike arrived it was red BMW 1000 (I think). The day was a scorcher and as Chris peeled off all his biking gear there was nothing there which made me want to take up motor cycling I'm afraid!

The system was listened to on familiar material, particularly Diana Krall "black crow" and Lou Reed "walk on the wild side" proof that we have been reading at least some of paulsurround's informative posts. There was also an interesting choral piece which Chris brought along with him which sounds fantastic when the system is singing properly. Chris can maybe enlighten us what it is called. We agreed that the system seemed to have improved a bit from the initial visit but Chris was adamant that there was a good deal more to come. Following several Space changes the bass was considerably easier to follow and vocals in particular sounded so much more natural. Yes, the girls in walk on the wild side did indeed walk into the Mancave!

What about the 520 system? This is located in a garden room looking out onto the back garden and is one of those rather tricky shaped open plan L shapes. I had previously played around a lot with the Space settings and concluded it sounded most acceptable with everything pretty much flat. Bear in mind this is a room where people are liable to walk around and sit down in all sorts of places so the remit is a little unusual. I generally find people like to "chill" and listen to music in that room. Chris wasn't very impressed with how the system sounded on his choral piece but the Diana Krall was ok. I scuttled off to make the tea to avoid him having to be too diplomatic! In any event, I can't deny that following some well judged Space tweaks the system was once again sounding more natural and tuneful when I returned.

So what is the final result? Both the systems sound good in their own ways. I'm sitting here and listening to Pirates of the Caribean soundtrack on the 350s whilst I'm writing this and it is pretty awesome in places.

I do believe in the theory that some electronics improves as it runs in. We both felt time had improved the system from when it was just installed.

I have read on another forum words to the effect that the Linn Space implementation is floored and a simplistic way of addressing room characteristics. I'd have to beg to differ. Both my systems sound a lot worse if you turn Space off.

I do think that to get Space right you need to either spend a fair bit of time tweaking or seek expert help. I've done a bit of both but I couldn't have arrived at the result I've got now without the help of a decent dealer.

Was the upgrade worth it? I definitely feel that a step improvement has occurred. I'm never going to be in a position of being able to compare what went before with what I have now so to some extent I have to rely on memory. I'm very pleased with the outcome and Mrs. G seems to be talking to me again! ?

I know everything has a price in this world.

Can someone explain how four pieces of wood, mitred, and a few blocks of wood costs £525!

I took my plinth to a craftsman cabinet maker and said how much would this cost to make? A one off he said £30 materials and a hours work.

I told him they were £525, he laughed and said you are been conned?

I told him the belt rubber drive belt was £50?

Must cost 20p to make? We are been conned , sorry we are fools

Anybody wanna buy a LP 12.? My gyrodec looked and sounded better...

RCU to fit Direktor

Hi all,

I've been putting together a modest knekt system on a budget. I just bought a cheap Direktor without an RCU and black RCU from my local dealer. Years ago the dealer removed the Direktor's RCU to use in a customer system to replace one that failed.

The problem is that the black RCU pictured doesn't fit in the Direktor. The mounting plate is meant to fit a standard US (where I am) electrical back box. I think, but I'm not sure that some RCUs came with a different mounting plate to fit a euro back box and also hopefully the Direktor. I think the euro version is shorter but wider.

The question is whether the Direktor required some sort of special mounting plate or adapter, or whether a black European RCU would fit. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks bmdduck

Aro Earth Cable - How to install on Sondek?

$

As above please gents. I've picked up and Aro and Armageddon and have been installing it tonight but cannot figure where the two end of the Aro earth cable attach? One is bare and one has a spade connector which I assume connects to he amp as per usual. So does the bare end route back underneath the Sondek and connect to the chassis, also does one retain the standard earth cable from cross member to sub-chassis? I did look at peters thread but still couldn't really tell what was going on in the pics. Thanks all!

Linn and Control4

$

I have updated the Linn Sneaky DSM to latest firmware (4.56.177) and have installed the latest driver in Control4. I have made all of my bindings (Xbox One on HDMI 1, TV Audio Out to Analog and then HDMI out from Sneaky to TV HDMI 2). I have also tried running all sources through the Sneaky and just the HDMI output to the TV.
The issue I am having is the driver isn't changing the input for any of the sources (Watch or Listen). Works when I select music from the Kazoo server but even then when I go to select a different source nothing happens at all and the Control4 thinks it has changed the input but the Linn keeps streaming music.

Any help in resolving this would be appreciated as I have a project with 14 Linn units that I would like to rollout this driver on.

Choose the Best Sound Configuration for Your Church’s

Recently, Highland has gone through a “replacement” phase of all of it’s technologies around it’s campus because of most everything being 10+ years old.

During that time, the 9 year old sound board (Allen and Heath iLive 176 and a 48 channel iDR Mix rack) in our main worship space died, was revived and then starting dying slowly again (the surface mainly) all within about 4 months. This catastrophic event the Lord guided us through started me on my journey to find the best sound console for our space. The iLive was good, but at the rate technology is advancing, it was an old dinosaur operating on outdated protocols.

Step 1 – What are your needs?

Before I thought about brands, I wrote down my needs. What were those?

Input channel count
Output channel count
Dante integration
IEM integration
Some other important factors one could consider would be analog or digital; if digital, the console’s operating system (what you need to do to actually set up the console and operate it); how effective you would be as a leader to train your volunteers on how to use it on a week to week basis; what kind of warranty each brand offered; customer service; and how long the consoles would last. Having experience in my favorite brands’ OS, I was confident I could come up with a process to easily train my volunteer and paid sound techs.

Step 2 – Brand and console selection

Those specific guidelines pointed me to the right “level” of sound console from my three favorite brands (DiGiCo, Allen and Heath, and Midas). I made sure to research each brand on my own and asked my integrator what would work best for our needs as well. As soon as we came to a consensus, we started the pricing and demoing phase.

Step 3 – Pricing and Demo Phase

In tandem with getting a quote on what it would cost to buy and install all of the equipment per sound console ecosystem, I scheduled demos of each sound console through my integrator. At each demo, my integrator brought me a quote for the install of the console and all other equipment. At the end of the day, this allowed me to rank each console by price and how it sounded. If a console sounded phenomenal, but was way out of my attainable price range, I would obviously not be able to select that console as the solution for our space.

Step 4 – Selection Phase

By this phase, I was intimately familiar with how each console sounded, operated and fit in to my needs. Fortunately for me, all three consoles fit in to my most basic channel count and integration needs. The deciding factors for me were how the console sounded and how closely that fit Highland’s ideal sound for our space and the price of the total install project.

For us, the best sounding console was the DiGiCo SD10, but it was around $140K to install all of the bells and whistles. The Midas Pro X with their new neutron processor sounded almost as good as the DiGiCo, but was only $70K to install after some generous promotions Midas was offering to all new console purchases at the time. This sealed the deal as I was not only considering how it would affect our worship space, but also the funds we had available in light of other expensive projects our elders were deciding on at the time (like a new van for ministries to use, a new AC system for one of the buildings, property purchase and other very expensive things). Saving the $70K and freeing up that cash to do other big projects around campus made it an easy sell to our elders and Administrative pastor.

Step 5 – Install Phase

Schedule a time with your integrator to install the sound console. Make sure to write down everything you are wanting and expecting during the install. Make sure you and your integrator agree to those terms!

Once they’ve completed the install, be sure to walk around and check every single thing they touched. I made a mistake and skipped this step. About 8 weeks later I noticed some mis-wiring on some amps and had to fix it myself. If I had caught that earlier before my integrator left, he could have fixed it for me.

Hopefully this will help some of you through the process of selecting the right sound board for you and your space!

Adding a rythmik sub

Trying to integrate a rythmik f12 G sub into a majik dsm system. Although I can get sound using the 'pre-out' from the majik dsm, how do I control crossover points, delay, gain, etc?

Instead of using the pre- outing the majik, should I use an amplified output from the exakt box to a high level input on the sub?

Unfortunately, linn does not include rythmik as one of its recognized speakers.

Anybody had this? Switched the Majik DSM to play the LP12. Quite an audible hiss through the speakers. Only on this Input. Playlist, Radio etc all ok. Did the usual thing of checking all connections were ok. Still the same. Opened up Konfig. I noticed a item that said "reboot". Never used this before but thought I may as well try it. DSM rebooted and everything is now ok.

Need advice on Ekwal based setup

$

Hi!

I recently aquired a few used Linn products and in need of some advice to how to complement it.

The setup is right now:

3 Ekwal speakers, one of them is used as Center the two others are the Front speakers.

2 Classik Unik/W speakers, used as back speakers.

1 Yamaha RX-V681, (bi-amp connected with the front's)

1 Linn System Controller AV5103, unused.

1 Linn Power Amplifer AV5125, unused.

1 Linn Sizmik 10.25, broken.

So I wonder are the Ekwal speakers good enought to be used as Front speakers, or should I try to replace them with other fronts and use the Ekwal as back speakers?

Also is it worth it to try to get the broken Sizmik repaired, (the whole amp will probly need replacement at a cost of around €1000).

Or would it be better to aquire something like 2 Majik 140 and use them as Front speakers, the Ekwal as back speakers and run without a sub.

And how much does the Yamaha RX-V681 bring down the system, as from when I have read on the forum the source should be around 30% or so of the system cost, while currently it's like 10% if I fix the sub.

Also just to note, my budget is somewhat strained, so id like cost effective solutions without compromising the sound! Wink

Majik DSM/3 with Naim SBL

Dear all,

I am thinking about reverting my Naim boxes (ND5xs, 122x, 150x) to an one box solution (passive). As I need some HDMI inputs the Majik DSM/3 seems like a perfect fit. Would you recommend it for use with Naim SBLs (I love them and they really go deep)? I only found one thread dating back to 2010 suggesting the MDSM would be able to drive them properly.

Also, would it be possible to active with an Exactbox-I?

Thanks in advance for your input.

So I bit the bullet having visited the dealer to listen to a Radical to replace my Lingo 2. Came away with all of the above.

Outstanding is all I can say, outstanding.

However I've got a query - why does the Kandid have a sticking plaster on it Smile I'm guessing it's coil tape ?

American Epic

I'm just watching the fourth episode of American Epic. It might be available on iPlayer, I don't know what the sound quality is on iPlayer. I grabbed the 720p torrent from that other "Swedish site that shall be named". I turned off my garbage 5.1, and was mono magical though my 2CH setup. Highly recommended.

Jack Black has reincarnated an old recording studio featuring 1920's microphones, electronics and a record lathe used in the first recordings. He brings together a wonderful group of musicians who recreate early American classics,an some new ones, with purity and authenticity. Enjoy!

C4200 question

Hi all,

I have both a Dynamiked C5100 and newer M6100 and although they should be equalish I notice that the C5100 runs hotter than the M6100. This means that its fans are on quite often.
Will the same be true for a 4200? I am somewhat considering buying one.

Bonusquestion: could I switch the powersupplies in the C5100 and C4200? If I decide to buy the C4200 I'd rather have that Dynamiked than the C5100
