I have been enjoying the addition of the second 5125, 5120 center and the 5150 Melodik for a few weeks now, and continue to enjoy and tweak the settings in the Oppo. While the 5.1 is pretty cool, my heart still lies in 2 channel stereo, well 2.1 now.
A few things about how I am currently configured:
In order to utilize the system as 2.1 with stereo sources I have the front L&R speakers set to 'small' in the Oppo, with a crossover frequency of 40 Hz. The 5140's seem very capable and play nicely controlled base to my ear, so my idea is to have the crossover to the subs be pretty low (the Oppo's lowest setting is 40 Hz) to 'take advantage' of the stereo bass drivers in the towers, and keep most of the sound as real stereo. The Melodik can go down much lower, so I might as well use it for stereo listening, as apposed to just setting the Oppo fronts to 'large', which yields no sub output with stereo sources. That being said, I am finding that there is very little content down this low, and often the sub goes idle / powers down due to lack of signal with my music library. Not a bad thing just an observation.
Anyhow - does anyone have any experience with the crossover between 5140 / Espeks to a 5150? 80 Hz seems like a popular crossover point in the 2.1 world but that is probably born from the common use of bookshelf speakers with 2.1 set-ups and not full range towers? As stated above, with almost all the music I have been listening to, the Melodik doesn't do much as currently configured. Has this been the experience of others? Is it really for 5.1 / movie listening? Or am I doing a bad thing with the low crossover point? If the crossover is moved up the 5140's and 2 channels of the one 5125 would have less work to do, maybe this would yield a better sound?
I know I know, play around myself and see what I think - I will continue to do that, just seeing if there is any experience in here to draw on...
The sub location is up front, to the right of the right speaker, not really in a corner (odd shaped room - the house has a very open floorplan).
