Room Treatment Advice Please!

Hi All,

I have recently moved house and while I am happy with the fact I now have a dedicated room for Hifi/Films/Games I am having an issue or two with room acoustics. I have tried moving speakers and the sub within practical limits but to no avail. The main issue is monotonic bass, and too much of it, but if I am going to have a go at treating the room I might as well do a bit for mid/treble while I am at it....

I dont think the sub is the issue here, as I have set its gain to zero on high level when set up in stereo and the issue is still there (the low level only comes through a 5.1 source). It is also set up correctly in phase as far as I am aware!

I am currently listening to everything using my Marantz AV8801's DACs and using its Audyssey XT32 to help alleviate the situation (it sounds LOADS better) but of course I would rather not have to rely on the processing to make the music sound good, especially since my long term plans for the system involve having a stereo pre and DS using its own DAC, and possibly some bigger speakers (802 Diamonds are what I have in mind but they might be too big from a sound perspective, I don't care how big the actual boxes are).

So I was wondering if anybody could advise me on what the best thing to do might be? I have uploaded some photos for potential advisers to view and then I will explain what I am thinking of doing.......

So here are the photos:

So, if the photos worked, here is what I intend to do....

I was thinking of buying two packs (4 bass traps altogether) from here:

http://www.acoustic-foam.co.uk/products/...Traps.html

And also buying one pack of these:

http://www.acoustic-foam.co.uk/products/...Tiles.html

This is mainly because I cant be bothered with DIYing my own, and compared to the cost of my system the money is not really a lot. Also if anyone has any suggestions of better alternatives in this price range I'm all ears.

So, I was thinking of putting the four bass traps in each vertical corner of the room, moving the sub and surrounds (these will be wall mounted eventually) slightly to accommodate in three corners and trim the other down to fit in above the amp. (The walls are about 1300mm high in the corners so this means not a lot of trimming to miss the amp.

Then I was thinking that I would stick the tiles on the vertical and sloped walls behind/above the sofa, and where I can on the side walls to reduce reflections. The gap between the velux windows is approximately 3 tiles wide, so was thinking of 6 or 9 on this area and then the remainder on the side walls as there is limited space here anyway. I am also going to put curtains on the window which should take care of that side to an extent. I don't feel that the mid/high frequency reflections are causing as much of an issue as bass.

So, any help/advice any of you can give would be appreciated. My thinking was quite a few of you would have had a go at this at some point since there generally isn't any EQ on a Linn system as far as I am aware.....

Cheers,

Tom
