If looking for a new 4-bay fast NAS, check out this deal (but be quick)...

Hi

Sorry to plonk this in the announcements thread, but it seems to be a bit of a good deal (Amazon.co.uk) and thus I thought I'd announce it here (in case anyone is teetering on the cliff of pondering a fast NAS). Basically, due to a price drop, I've just bought myself a new NAS (see this thread on the forum of Qnap stuff) and I'm well chuffed with the price.

Originally, I wanted a TS-453, but they were £485 (or thereby) but I noticed that the TS-451 recently dropped from about £400 to below £300. Based on that, I reckoned that the TS-453 might drop in the near future, and sure enough, last weekend it dropped from £489 to £422. Almost tempted, I checked again this morning, and I was a tad saddened to see it had risen to £445 (I don't know WTF is going on with UK prices; it's just totally bonkers, at the moment).

So, having just given up (and pondering buying a motherboard, two disks and nailing it all to a plank and installing Debian) I was reading a post on the Qnap forum (as per the above link) from someone who'd found a good price for a TS-453. I checked his Qnap forum registration IP and found he was in the UK (I'd expected it to be a USA address) so I posted back that I'd also had a look, but not found any good deals (hoping he'd reveal his source). He responded this evening, so before getting back to him, I checked Amazon again, and I was totally astonished to find that in the past few hours, the TS-453 had dropped to £438; that's way cheaper than the two bay (TS-253) model, which is a bit bonkers (other vendors are offering the TS-453 at £550 or >)!

Anyhow, I just thought I'd post that 'heads-up' here in case anyone else is looking for a snorty (4 core CPU, power efficient and posh metal case) Qnap, as that seems an absolutely astonishing price (and based on the 253 price trends, I suspect it might even go back up in the morning) so I though it would be cool to let folks know it's on the go (right now). It's shown as not being in stock (didn't check before hitting the 'go' button, but I've just had an email to say it'll be 2 days) but in any case, I don't care as I'm in no hurry to get it (and it is Amazon supplied - as opposed to a a third party trader - so I am not at all concerned about it being in any way unsound).

I'm actually still in total shock, as I've been tracking various models (both USA and UK prices) over the past few months, and that seems to be a pretty mega-cool price. I'm not sure if the shock is from the good deal, or from the fact that I've just spend North of £400 (being Scottish, I suspect it's more the latter)! Tongue

All the best
Bri

NB OMG, I can't believe that I've just bought yet another bl**dy NAS; I'd better go and buy some shelf reinforcement brackets to take the additional weight (actually, I'd come to think about it, I'd better swiftly work out how to sell my TS-659 Pro on eBay, before the credit card bill arrives; oops)! Big Grin
