If you are more impressed by tree dwelling savant banjo players than, for example, Justin Bieber, I can recommend the varied perspectives offered by Otis Taylor in “Recapturing the Banjo”. There’s lots of stuff going on here. The cover version of “Hey Joe” is a blast and conjures images of a deranged George Formby (I know strictly speaking he played a cross between a banjo and a ukulele) chopping away frantically alongside the searing electric guitar of a Jimi Hendrix stand-in, all nicely propelled along on waves of fat bass and ethereal backing vocals. Definitely worth a listen for its blues interpretation of both traditional songs combined with original compositions. I’ve had this for a while, but can’t stop playing it after a re-visit.
