I'm getting an ever increasing number of rogue un-editable files that I can't even delete.

As a totally neurotic obsessive I find it irritating (and inconvenient to be fair) in the extreme. How do I overcome this?

The common factor seems to be 'name too long' - but only manifests itself once the item is loaded so the is s . . nothing I can do about it.
